Bee Heng Popiah (Newton Food Centre)

Welcome to Bee Heng Popiah in Singapore. Bee Heng is one of the oldest food stalls, having started in 1977. They also sell Satay. They make Popiah in the Hokkien style, following a recipe from 1930. They use just a little sweet and chili sauce, so the outside stays dry. Some people may prefer a juicier version, though.

Moreover, Popiah 薄餅, a thin pancake, is a favorite street food in Singapore. Surprisingly, it used to be explicitly enjoyed during the Qingming Festival. During this time, people honored their ancestors by eating cold food, known as “Han Shi,” because they couldn’t use fire during the festival. Popiah was one of the dishes enjoyed during this particular time.

Did you choose you enjoy the most from the menu?

My favorite dish is Popiah. It was tasty because it was wrapped in a big roll with lots of yummy ingredients in its thin skin. The primary flavors were radish, eggs, and bean sprouts. It also had a bit of spicy chili, which added a delicious kick. The Popiah is a must-try at Newton Food Centre for its excellent taste and reasonable price. I might try their satay sticks when I visit again. Please also look at our Newton Food Centre Best Stall for tasty food at the famous Hawker Centre.

The chicken satay is tender and delicious. The peanut sauce with pineapple puree is very yummy. It's not easy to find peanut sauce with pineapple these days. Glad that they are still selling satay!

Found the popiah and the satay (chicken and mutton) to be average, though the popiah was better than the satay. The satay was $7 for 10 sticks, and the popiah was $4.60 for 2 rolls.

Tasty popiah with crispy bits. Had to take off 1 star as there is a 2 popiah minimum requirement per order. Both rolls served were quite thin and for the price, it does not leave one feeling satisfied.

Was looking for an afternoon snack and decided to try this popiah store at Newton Hawker Centre. Good fast service but agree with other reviewers at $4.40 for 2 rolls, nothing special and pretty average. Could do with a bit more tastier ingredients and savoury sauce. Location is convenient and will likely try again if they could boost/improve the Taste a bit more! #hawkerheroes2020.
